Mizoram: ZPM asks state government to “camp” Assam police personnel near Vairengte
Azul: ZPM Thalai, a youth wing of the state’s main opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), on Wednesday asked the state government to evict the Assam police personnel, who were reportedly near the state border town of Waringate. They are camping in the Mizoram area.
A statement issued by the Youth Wing alleged that Assam police were blocking several Meizu farmers from Waringate, who are cultivating in the Motui Zhao area near Waringate town, from entering their fields.
He also alleged that Assam Police was issuing identity cards to Mizoram farmers.
“It is very unfortunate that the farmers of Mizo are being issued control, limited and identity cards by the Assam Police on their own lands. This incident has shown the incompetence of the Mizoram Home Minister,” the Youth Wing said. Said in the statement.
The youth wing further alleged that Assam police had been camping in the area since the beginning of this year and had destroyed betel orchards belonging to Mizo farmers.
He urged Home Minister Lalchamliana to take steps to ensure that Assam police personnel were evacuated from the area.
Meanwhile, Mizoram Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) John Nehlia said the ZPM youth had been misinformed about the current situation.
He said representatives of both the Mizoram and Assam governments had met on March 7 to discuss the relocation of the Assam police camp and to ensure free movement of Mizo farmers in the Motui Zhao area.
He said the meeting, which was held in a cordial atmosphere, agreed that Assam Police would shift its base on a hill near an LP school near the Assam border.
When the Assam Police raised the question that they would not be able to differentiate between farmers and individuals who accidentally enter the forest, the meeting decided to issue identity cards to these distinguished farmers who cultivate in the Motui Zhao area. They cultivate bari or rice. He said that such identity cards would be issued by the sub-divisional officers in Waringate.
