Mizoram youth mysteriously found dead while burning jhum land

Aizawl: In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old youth died while burning the land of Jhum. The incident took place on March 15, about 20 km from Darlawn village in Aizawl district.
The victim, Vanlalhriatpuia, a resident of Darlawn Venghlun, along with two of his friends went to burn his jhum land on March 15.

The three also plan to catch fish after burning the jhum land.
Vanlalhriatpuia left his mobile phone and other belongings with his friends as he was planning to return for fishing soon after burning the jhum land.
As Vanlalhriatpuia did not return from his jhum to the appointed place where the three were to meet, two of his friends set out for a river in the hope that Vanlalhriatpuia would soon join them.

When Vanlalhriatpuia did not come to the river even after the two friends had stayed for two nights, they believed that he must have already returned home.

On Sunday, when his two friends went to his home in the village to return Vanlalhriatpuia’s mobile phone and other belongings, they realised that he did not come back from the jhum.

Subsequently, family members and locals launched a search operation and recovered the half-decomposed body of Vanlalhriatpuia from a stream on Sunday evening.

He suffered burns on his face, shoulders and arms.

Vanlalhriatpuia was laid to rest on Monday.
