Aizawl: Voter registration in assembly elections due in 2023, the Mizoram election department has urged its Tripura counterpart to speed up the process of enrollment of Bro voters in the electoral roll of the neighboring state, an official said.
Mizoram’s Joint Chief Electoral Officer David Liansanglura Pichau said he has requested the Election Department of Tripura to speed up the electoral registration of voters from Mizoram who have resettled in the neighboring state.

He said that the names of 1,992 borough voters, who originally belonged to Mizoram, have been removed from the state voter list after their entry in the Tripura voter list till date.
He said that Bro voters actually belong to nine assembly constituencies of the state.
He said that out of 1,992 borough voters, 1,633 belong to the border district of Mammit in Tripura, 187 belong to the border district of Kolasib in Assam and the remaining 172 belong to Langli district in the southern part of the state.
Pachau said that more than 5,000 Mizoram bros are reportedly registered in the Tripura voter list and the processing of related requests for deletion to the Mizoram election department is relatively slow.
11,759 bro-voters, including 5,751 women voters, in Mizoram’s voter list have been allowed to resettle in Tripura.

The general elections to the 40-member assembly of Mizoram are scheduled to be held later next year.
Thousands of Buro voters had fled to Tripura in 1997 following ethnic tensions sparked by the killing of a Mizo forest officer by a former Buro militant.
Since then, they have been living in transit camps for more than two decades.
The first repatriation attempt in November 2009 failed not only due to the killing of a Mizo villager by Buro militants, but also started another round of exodus.
Between 2009 and 2019, the Center and Tripura governments made at least 9 attempts to repatriate Baru tribals from Tripura.
On 16 January 2020, an agreement was signed by the Centre, Mizoram and Tripura governments and representatives of several Baro organizations, according to which more than 35,000 displaced Baro tribes who were reluctant to return to Mizoram during repatriation were Permanent resettlement was allowed in Tripura.
