Mizoram, Tamil Nadu will study the Assam model of urban poverty alleviation.

Guwahati: A team of Tamil Nadu government officials recently visited Assam under the direction of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to study the Assam model of urban poverty alleviation.

It said that the recent initiatives of the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM), Assam, aimed at eradicating urban poverty and socio-economic empowerment of economically disadvantaged people in urban areas, will be carried out on an all-India basis. The surface is very well received.
Under the strong leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal, the state’s success in creating sustainable livelihoods for the urban poor and the e-commerce sector has now become an example for other states in the country.

It said the delegation visited Assam to study the key initiatives of National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM), Assam and interacted with officials of NULM, Assam as well as members of self-help groups.
The group visited the establishments of weaving, pickle making, ethnic Assamese food, mushrooms etc. through women’s support groups in urban areas of Assam.

The team also visited Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s City Livelihoods Centre, where products produced by self-help groups are displayed and sold.The team also visited a shelter for urban displaced persons located in Gita. Nagar, Guwahati.

The delegation of Tamil Nadu Government officials expressed great satisfaction over the experience gained during the visit to Assam and hoped that the experience would be of great help in the work of NULM, Tamil Nadu.
A team from the Mizoram government will also visit Assam soon to study the Assam model of urban poverty alleviation, NULM, Assam officials said.
