Aizawl: The Mizoram police are interrogating a top leader of the Hamar freedom fighter group, who was recently arrested by the Assam police near Silchar, a senior police officer said.

Ralte said the freedom fighter leader was involved in several criminal cases including extortion in Mizoram.
Ralte said Sanate is currently in the custody of the Mizoram Police in Kolasib and will be handed over to the Assam Police very soon.
Sanate (52) was arrested by the Assam Police on December 24 from Fulertal area of Assam’s Chachar district. He is the president of a splinter faction of the HPC (D), which is active in Cachar and Manipur.
The group is also involved in criminal cases including extortion in Mizoram.
The militant group had also demanded extortion from our majority villages in the northeastern part of Mizoram bordering Manipur in December, police said.
The Senate-led HPC (D) was formed after its parent group -Hmar People’s Convention- (HPC) signed a peace accord with the Mizoram government in 1994, resulting in a Development Council for the Hamar People. was born
The HPC (D), which had demanded an autonomous district council under the Sixth Schedule, was not satisfied with the peace accord.
However, the group split into two in 2011. While one group is headed by Sanate, the other is headed by H. Zosangbera.
The H. Zosangbera faction of the HPC(D) signed an agreement with the Mizoram government in April 2018, leading to the birth of the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) under a separate act.
Although the ADC remains its main demand, the Sanate group is not very active in Mizoram.
