Aizawl: A group of around 50 people set fire to six vehicles carrying a consignment of nuts in west Mizoram’s Mamit district near the Tripura border, a senior police officer said on Sunday.
The incident took place on National Highway 108 on Saturday morning near Putarte river between Zamwang and Zawlnuam villages when the vehicles were heading towards Kanhamon on the Mizoram-Tripura border, Mammit District Superintendent of Police Lalthangpui Palamte said.
They said the dry fruits were believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar.
He said that between 4 am and 5 am people stopped the vehicles and the drivers were asked to unload their goods, the vehicles were parked on the side of the road and burnt along with the goods around 6:30 am.
A case has been registered at Mizoram’s Kanhmun police station and a massive investigation is underway, the SP said.
He said that no person or group has claimed responsibility and no one has been arrested so far.
He added that the probable cause of the incident is yet to be known.
