Guwahati: Mizoram has the highest accident rate in the country, while Sikkim has the highest death rate in the country.
This was revealed in the report ‘Road Accident in India-2020’ prepared by the Transport Research Wing (TRW) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and released today.
According to the report, the parameters of road accidents were significantly reduced in 2020 as compared to 2019. The total number of accidents decreased by an average of 18.46%, the number of deaths decreased by 12.84% and the number of injured decreased by 22.84%. Last year’s average
A total of 3,66,138 road accidents were reported by the States and Centrally Administered Territories (UTs) during the calendar year 2020, killing 1,31,714 and injuring 3,48,279.
In addition to a slight increase of 0.46% in 2018, the number of road accidents has decreased since 2016. In 2020, for the second year in a row, the total number of deaths in road accidents has decreased. Similarly, the number of injured has been declining since 2015.
Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of road accidents in 2020 with 45,484 accidents (12.4%), however, the highest death toll in road accidents was in Uttar Pradesh (19,149 or 14.5%).
Regarding overall road accidents in the Northeast, the report says that despite some minor fluctuations, the percentage of Northeastern states in total accidents during the last four years from 2016 to 2020 remained constant.
In the northeastern states, Assam recorded the highest number of accidents between 2016 and 2020, however, the average growth rate in 2020 was significantly reduced by 21% compared to 2019. Nagaland is in second place with 500 accidents, followed by Tripura (466). And Manipur (432).
