Guwahati: Two days after a massive landslide in Mizoram’s Hnahthial district, rescue teams have pulled out three more bodies from under the rubble of a stone quarry in Maudarh village.
The death toll from the recovery has risen to 11 while one person is still missing.
It should be noted that 11 bodies were recovered, the total number of missing persons was 12 and now one is missing.
He said that out of 12 persons, 4 were employees of ABCI Infrastructures Private Limited while 8 others were contractor employees.
He said that five earth movers, one stone crusher and one drilling machine were also completely buried under the debris.
The area of the landslide is about 5,000 square meters, the DC added.
Sources said that the rescue operation is being supervised by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, district administration, Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) troops and local volunteers.
Earlier, Hnahthial Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Kumar said that the tragic incident took place around 3 pm on Monday in Modar village, which is 45 minutes away from Hnahthial city.
The SP said 13 people were working when a massive landslide occurred in the stone quarry and one worker managed to escape from the spot.
Eyewitnesses said that the workers had dug too deep and upset the stability of the stone quarry, resulting in the entire mountain collapsing on the workers.
The stone quarry is owned by ABCI, which is carrying out widening of a section of National Highway-54 between Hnahthial town and Don village.
Official sources said that the construction company will arrange to transport the bodies of the victims to their respective villages.
