Aizawl: BJP leader M Laikao was on Thursday sworn in as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) in South Mizoram’s Seha, an official said.
The development comes nearly a month after political deadlock in the 25-member council, Seha District Judicial Magistrate S Ngotlia administered the oath of office and secrecy to Laikau during an oath-taking ceremony held at the council’s headquarters in Seha. Officer Beirokhu Beta said.
He said that Laikau is the second CEM in the present council and the 20th CEM since the establishment of MADC in 1972.
Laikau was elected from Tukalu constituency in the council elections held in May.
Speaking on the occasion, the new CEM said that his government would strive to create a new Marland by focusing on corruption-free governance, good governance and law and order.
He wished that good governance and law and order should be maintained in the council.
Laikav also appointed nine Executive Members (EMs) including 7 BJP members and two resigned MNF members J Vabikyasa and S Lalrimathanga.
N Lalrosinga along with J Vabikyasa and S Lalrimathanga, who supported the BJP to oust the erstwhile MNF-Congress coalition government during the no-confidence motion on November 25, quit the MNF on Monday.
However, all three MDCS chose to remain “independent”. N Lalrosinga was given the post of Vice-Chairman of the Planning Board.
Laikav also appointed Chinni as Deputy Chairman and Bihu Nohru as Deputy Chief Whip from Chapi Constituency.
Beta said that N Vyakho, who was the chairman of the council under the ousted MNF-Congress coalition government, has been recommended for the same post in the new BJP-led MADC government.
Sources said that Viakho will leave the MNF very soon.
MADC was in political chaos for almost a month after the MNF-Congress coalition government headed by Congress’s H Malvin was forced out of power on November 25 in a no-confidence motion.
In the council elections held in May, which gave rise to the “hung council”, the BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 12 seats, while the MNF won 9 and the Congress 4.
MADC was established in 1972 along with Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) and Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) for Mara tribes.
