Aizawl: In an effort to find an amicable solution to the border dispute, Mizoram and Assam on Wednesday agreed to maintain cordial relations between the police forces of the two states deployed along the inter-state border, an official statement said.

The two sides also agreed to take measures to ensure that economic activities continue unhindered along the borders and allow farmers to work in their fields on both sides of the border, the statement said. As per the decision of ministerial-level talks on August 9, deputy commissioners of five border districts – two from Mizoram and three from Assam – held a meeting at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp on the Mizoram-Assam border on Wednesday.

In the meeting, it was agreed to maintain cordial and friendly relations between the police personnel of the two states posted on the inter-state border. During the meeting, it was decided to ensure that farmers on both sides of the borders are allowed to cultivate and do other economic activities freely.

The meeting, which was attended by other officials of the two states and CRPF officers besides the DC, also deliberated on several issues, including collective protection of forest areas along the border of the two states. The meeting discussed the ongoing construction of bridges by Mizoram near Thangalon village and Zofai in Mizoram on the Mizoram-Assam border and agreed to approach the higher authorities to resolve major issues on the issue.
