Aizawl: Mizoram: African swine fever kills 38 pigs, further infection suspected. The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) since February this year has killed 4,848 pigs and pigs so far, according to figures released by the state’s Animal and Veterinary Department on Sunday.

On Sunday, 39 pigs died of ASF and 11 others, all of whom died the same day, are suspected to be infected with swine flu.

It said that so far, 4,077 pigs have been killed to prevent further spread of ASF, and 11 of them were killed on Sunday.

In total, 641 pigs have died of ASF-related pig diseases and the exact cause of death has not yet been determined, it said.

According to statistics, highly contagious swine flu has so far affected 68 villages and areas in nine of the 11 districts.

Earlier, the state’s Minister for Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, Dr K Bechwa, had said that the state government would soon declare the outbreak of ASF a state disaster.

He hopes that farmers, who have lost their pigs to ASF, will be compensated once the outbreak is declared a disaster.
