Mizoram: A ‘missing’ woman was found dead in the elevator shaft of Aizawl Hotel.
Aizawl: A 30-year-old woman from the town of Lunglei in South Mizoram was found dead in a hotel in Aizawl six days after she was reported missing, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.
While the initial police investigation suspects that the deceased died after falling into the elevator shaft through the bad door of the hotel elevator, his family suspects that it is a case of murder. The woman worked as a temporary employee in the state’s electricity and power department.
Mizoram Deputy Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said Van Vanlalhmangaihzuali had been reported missing from the Lushai Hills Residency Hotel in the Zarkawt area of Aizawl since April 14, a day before Good Friday.
He said the woman, who belonged to the electric wing of Langley, had come to Aizawl on April 13 to sit for a competitive examination with her boyfriend T. Zodinsanga (38) of the same town and the two were kept in the same hotel.
He said that after a complaint of disappearance was lodged by her boyfriend, an urgent inquiry was launched and the hotel was searched during which the woman’s body was found in a decomposed state under the elevator shaft on Tuesday evening. ۔
The forensic team was immediately called and an inquiry was conducted, which revealed that the woman’s neck bone had been severely broken in the fall.
Khiangte said the preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased had fallen into the elevator shaft from a bad elevator door on the lobby floor of the hotel, which should have been closed when the elevator was not on the same floor.
According to the DIG, the woman’s boyfriend had complained about her disappearance on April 15, saying he had last seen her on the night of April 13. He also told police that the hotel’s CCTV cameras had detained him as he climbed into the hotel. Gate on the morning of April 14. He said he had searched for her on April 14 and reported the matter to police the next day.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the two had been drinking on the night of April 13 and the boyfriend had fallen asleep around 10 pm while the victim had allegedly continued drinking more.
Police said a thorough examination of the available CCTV footage concluded that he had never left the hotel premises.
DIG Khiangte said the two had come to Aizawl from Lunglei on April 13 to sit for the Combined Graduate Level exam, which was scheduled for the next day. He added that the deceased’s boyfriend was in police custody for further questioning.
The post-mortem report of the deceased was yet to be released at the time of filing the report.
Meanwhile, Van Vanlalhmangaihzuali’s family said they suspected rudeness in the matter.
The family claims that Van Vanlalhmangaihzuali had offered her marriage several times, but her family refused, citing “lame excuses”.
The body will be sent to his hometown after an autopsy on Wednesday, police said.
