Meitei victims of three districts meet Amit Shah, demands relief

Manipur: The displaced Meitei victims of three districts submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit late yesterday evening, demanding early rehabilitation and return to their original land with adequate security measures.
The displaced Meitei community from the three districts of Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Moreh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the third day of his visit to Manipur.
He interacted with them at the Raj Bhavan late in the evening after returning from Kangpokpi and Moreh.
In their meeting, the victims urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to rehabilitate them to their original places as soon as possible with adequate security measures.
Responding to their demand, Amit Shah assured that the integrity of Manipur will not be compromised at any cost. But resettlement can take time. However, the relief materials will be distributed in two to three days.
Soibam Sangeeta, a victim of violence who belongs to the Meitei community of Churachandpur, said that being a minority community in Meitei Chorachandpur, she faced many challenges.
They used to pay illegal taxes every year to Kuki militants like ZRA, KNF, KRA etc. Also, the Meitei community has to take permission from the Kuki militants to hold any kind of ceremony or festival.
She further said that the said matter has been shared with Amit Shah but he did not make any comment in this regard from his side in the meeting.
“Churachandpur is my native land where we have been living for many years. We all want to go back there but at the same time we feel unsafe and insecure,” she said.
Therefore, we urged the Home Minister to provide adequate security measures for resettlement at the earliest. Amit Shah told us that it would take time to resettle the displaced victims on their original land, but he assured that steps would be taken in this regard.
N Pulindro Singh, another displaced victim of Moreh, who is also an adviser to Meitei Council Moreh, said that Home Minister Amit Shah has told that a survey of fire-damaged houses for both communities will be conducted and assistance will be provided.
Along with this, Amit Shah also said that he will try to deploy IRB personnel in Moreh to protect the Meitei community in Moreh.
He also said that permanent deployment of IRB battalion to maintain law and order in Mora is one of his main demands. He also called for tracing Meitei people who fled to Myanmar during the sectarian violence.
