Meghalaya: Sports training program for prisoners

Shillong: The Meghalaya Jail Department and the Indian Oil Corporation have launched a new initiative to train prison inmates in various sports competitions to improve their physical and mental fitness.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) in charge of prisons M Kharkrang on Monday inaugurated a month-long training program for inmates at the District Jail here with IOC Executive Director G Ramesh.

Today is an important day for prison and correctional services as inmates will be trained in carom board and volleyball in collaboration with the IOC.

He said that the aim of the sports training program for the inmates was to improve the physical and mental health of the inmates, especially during epidemic diseases.

The IGP Jails said that the program would be extended to other district jails across the state.

At present, 75 inmates will receive sports training in one month, he said.

IOC Chairman Shri Kant Madhu Vaidya , who launched the program through online mode, said that the total number of jails under the program has increased to 37 and IOC aims to reach more than 550 during the third phase of the program. To provide training to prisoners.

He said that the first two phases of the program have already started a significant social movement by changing the lives of the prisoners and facilitating their integration with the society.
