Meghalaya: MLA Kumpha expresses concern over villages given to Assam.

Shillong: Rambari Jaringam MLA Kumpha Marbanyang on Monday expressed concern over three villages – Joypur, Salbari and Huapara being handed over to Assam and said he would take up the matter with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Will take up and try to include these villages in the state.

“We are trying to request our chief minister to hold talks with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as the people of these areas want to stay in Meghalaya,” Marbanyang said.

This government (under Konrad Sangma of the National People’s Party) followed the 2011 map given to Assam by the previous government (under Mukal Sangma of the Indian National Congress) and these three villages were not included in the 2011 report.

The three villages were originally a part of the Western Khasi Hills but are no longer included in the list of places that were signed by Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya and his Assam counterpart in the agreement to settle the inter-state border disputes. .

Longpia falls in the Marbanyang constituency and falls under the disputed land. Sardars, Sardars, Huma Sardars and others should be taken on board. The MLA said that the purpose of this settlement needs to be understood by the representatives and then public opinion should be taken as in the first phase.

MLA Kumpha Marbanyang and MDC Bajoop Pengroup, both local representatives of one of the disputed areas of the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, are hopeful that the pending issue will be resolved.

“We are seeing protests and misleading statements from many pressure groups which are sad when it comes to the West Khasi Hills. To say that we have left out many areas is wrong,” Pingroup said.

Meghalaya has acquired areas like Tarabari.

Why are these people not talking about this?” he asked.

“We feel that we have neglected these three villages so we are hopeful that with consultation we can bring them back so that the movements stop. It is not like we are selling our land. It was the previous government negligent and we have to pay for it,” Pingroup added.
