Shillong: Meghalaya Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla said on Wednesday that a total of four people were killed in a devastating typhoon in several districts of the state last week.

Sheila said the district was most affected by the heavy rains.

“According to the report we received, on April 14, 2022, 47 villages in Umsning Block and 29 villages in Bhoirymbong Block were affected by the cyclone in Re-Bhoi District,” Sheila said.

Rains and hailstorms on April 17 and 18 severely damaged three houses and partially damaged 690 in the East-West Khasi Hills Mountaineering Block.

On April 15, a house was damaged when a fire broke out in the Wapung block of East Jaintia Hills and a wall fence collapsed.
A lightning strike on April 15 in the Amlarem block of the western Jaintia Hills also killed six cattle.

“Out of the four, two deaths were caused by landslides in Mawlat under the Mawkynrew block,” Sheila said. Numerous reports of landslides have also been received from the eastern and western highlands districts.

Between April 17 and 19, 695 houses were partially damaged and two houses were completely damaged by the storm in the Nongstoiรฑ and Mawshynrut blocks.

The Minister further asked the citizens to beware of continuous rains. He added that such accidents happen during the pre-monsoon season and urged citizens to be careful.
