Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday ruled out any plan to change the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Assam and Meghalaya to resolve the first phase of the border dispute.
Sangma’s reaction comes at a time when organizations are demanding that the government either revise the MoU or scrap it. Khasi Students Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), Federation for Achak Freedom (FAF) and several other stakeholders. met the Chief Minister on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
Talking to the media, Sangma said that after hearing the concerns of the organizations, the government showed them the historical facts and how the entire debate was based on the 2011 report.
Sangma added that he explained to them (leaders of the organizations) that it was difficult to change the report submitted by the Meghalaya government in 2011.
“It was a big challenge, but we had to go ahead with the 2011 report. They understand the issue now, but the concerns still remain.
People’s desire and desire to live in Meghalaya, and they want to see. Let’s see if some steps can be taken to work on these issues,” CM Sangma said.
The three villages developed by the organizations are Joypur, Salbari and Huapara.
Sangma said that since the second round of talks has just started, it remains to be seen how to proceed on the issue.
