Shillong: Meghalaya: 13 killed, more than 500,000 affected by rains since April . More than 5.43 lakh people have been affected by incessant rains in Meghalaya and 13 people and seven animals have been killed since April 1, 2022, Meghalaya Revenue and Disaster Management Department Minister Kyrmen Shylla said on Monday.

Sheila added that 581 villages have been affected since April 1.
Eight people were reported injured. He added that the state has also seen massive damage to public and private property during this period.

Sheila said that necessary steps have been taken by the department regarding natural disasters reported in different districts, adding that disasters are something which they cannot predict but should be careful and take precautionary measures.
Asked if any initiative has been taken for landslide-prone areas like Pynursla or others, Sheila said it would be impossible to completely stop the movement on this route, as such an action would take the lives of people. Will stop

Sheila said the deputy commissioners and officials of the districts concerned were keeping a close watch on the flood situation, especially in the Garo Hills. He added that whenever he felt that the district administration needed help, he would help if needed. Sheila also said that the government has provided Rs 5 million to the district administration for relief.
The Minister also said that the 15th Finance Commission has allocated funds exclusively for disaster management. Funds have been provided for five years. Seeing that natural calamities keep coming every year, the department has been given funds. So with these funds, we can reach out to these affected families, “said Sheila.
