Tezpur: A massive eviction drive began on Saturday morning in Sonitpur district, where tight security was in place while 330 acres of land was being cleared.
According to the police, the eviction drive is going on peacefully and without any resistance. The eviction drive, which began at 5 am, was expected to be completed by 2 pm.
About 50 excavators, heavy machinery and workers are on site to demolish houses in No. 3 Chitalmari area at Barchalla on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra. So far, the drive has been incident-free, according to officials.
Residents living in the area had already left with their belongings after receiving eviction notices. According to a district administration official, security forces had been patrolling the area since August 31, forcing people to vacate the land voluntarily.
Locals said most of the people had migrated decades ago from Nagaon and Morigaon districts on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra following Massive eviction.
Around 1,200 security personnel have been deployed at the scene and equipped with anti-riot gear.
