Imphal: Boxing great MC Mary Kom on Thursday urged the Center to help curb the violence in Manipur.
The army and the Assam Rifles were deployed to control the situation in the northeastern state where violence erupted during the tribal agitation on Wednesday.
“My state Manipur is burning, please help,” the veteran boxer Mary Kom tweeted early in the morning, sharing pictures of the violence, and tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
A defense spokesman said the army and the Assam Rifles were deployed during the night, and along with the state police, the forces were able to contain the violence till morning.
So far, forces have rescued and sheltered 4,000 people from violence-hit areas, he said, adding that more people were being shifted to safer places.
He said that a flag march is being conducted to control the situation.
The violence broke out on Wednesday during a ‘tribal solidarity march’ called by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) in Torbang area of Churachandpur district, which included non-tribal Meiteis, who dominate the Imphal Valley. are protesting against the demand of Scheduled Tribe (ST).
A senior police officer said thousands of agitators took part in the rally, during which clashes broke out between tribals and non-tribals, and it spread to more districts.
