GUWAHATI: Celebrations of 200 years of Assam tea began in Jorhat with the launch of a monogram by renowned author Arup Dutta and a book by tea researcher and author Pradip Baruah, highlighting the origins and growth of the industry. .
Monogram titled ‘Birth of Assam Tea Industry’ traces the growth and development of the sector, and the book ‘Bicentenary of Assam Tea 1823-2023: Birth and Development of Indian Tea’ published by North Eastern Tea Association. Who is (NETA).
Both were launched by Bidyananda Barkakoty and Swapna Sarmah, both hailing from old Assamese tea plantation families, along with former Tea Board Chairman Prabhat Bezboruah on January 7.
To celebrate 200 years of Assam tea, NETA has launched a ‘Tea Academy’ with Manoj Jallan as its first director.
The facility will conduct long term and short term courses to produce trained manpower for the industry.
Barkakoty, a prominent tea grower and former NETA official, told PTI that screening of a documentary film on tea, inauguration of a tea museum in Dibrugarh, development of a tea park coming up in Chaygaon will be done throughout the year. Plans for the celebrations are underway. .
Efforts should be made to recognize tea as the national beverage and this historic opportunity should be utilized for general promotion of the beverage to increase its consumption in the country.
NETA said that India’s G-20 presidency can also be an opportunity to highlight and showcase the unique character of tradition, culture, health benefits and tourism potential of tea in Assam and other parts of India.
