Manipur: A peaceful public rally was taken out by thousands of participants in Kakching district on Saturday, demanding cancellation of the SoO with Kuki militants and protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity.
The rally, organized by the district level committee for survival, started at 10 am from the head office Kakching. It came from two different directions and headed towards the Kakching District Headquarters. The protesters also presented a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India through DC Kakching Somorjit Salam.
Protesters from Kakching Sumak Leikai went to the DC office complex via Kakching Keithel while protesters from Keirak side also came to the DC office.
The Kakching police team including SP Kakching Shrey Vats, SDO Kakching maintained strict vigilance to prevent any untoward incident during the protest. The memorandum containing 10 demands was submitted by the select committee members.
The requirements
1. Removal of illegal immigrants from Manipur
2. To form a fact-finding committee on the prevailing ethnic conflict
3. Adequate punishment should be given to the miscreants who are involved in the killing of innocent lives, destruction and burning of the Meetei houses and properties of the deceased.
4. No separate administration in Manipur.
5. Implement NRC in the state and immediate withdrawl of SoO.
6. Take steps to restore peace and normalcy in the state.
7. Help the homeless to return home.
8. Take strict action against poppy plantations in the state.
9. Allow transportation of food items and daily necessities on two national highways, the lifelines of Manipur.
Speaking to the media, committee member Pukhrambam Somorendro said that the people of Kakching will not remain silent on the ongoing conflict in the state. He also questioned the government as to how long the displaced people would take shelter in the relief camps and demanded the central and state governments to restore peace in the state.
Somorendro also said that the people of Kakching will take fresh decisions on what steps to take after Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Manipur.
