Imphal: Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) President Archbishop Andrew Thazhath along with a delegation visited the conflict-affected areas of Manipur to assess the situation for himself.
The team, consisting of Archbishop Dominic Lowman, Fr. Jervis D’Souza, and Fr. Dr. Paul Moonjely witnessed the catastrophic destruction of houses, places of worship, schools and institutions in various affected areas.
During the visit to Kakching, Sugnu region, Pakkhau, Canchipur, Sangaiprou and others, the team witnessed the widespread devastation caused by the violence.
Displaced families living in a relief camp at the Indoor Stadium, Kaohsiung received much-needed relief items. The delegation also inaugurated a medical camp in Pakkhau to address the critical health needs of the affected communities.
Looking at the desolate areas and destroyed properties, CBCI expressed deep concern for the future and welfare of those fleeing these areas, especially the children who face distress and distress in their current situation.
A sense of mutual distrust and fear in the region adds to the complexity of the crisis.
CBCI’s humanitarian response organization Caritas India is actively helping to provide relief and assistance to the affected communities.
In collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Diocesan Social Services Society (DSSS), Caritas India has provided relief assistance of Rs.3 crore till date.
Various religious congregations and church communities have also extended their solidarity by offering material, health care and psychosocial support in relief camps.
CBCI condemned all forms of violence, attacks and atrocities, especially on institutions, places of worship, and vulnerable sections of society like women and children.
The organization urged the government to maintain the secular fabric of the country, strengthen constitutional values and promote an environment of peaceful coexistence among different communities.
