Imphal: Taking note of repeated road accidents and loss of life on Likhru Bridge on Imphal-Dimapur Road (National Highway 2), various organizations in Manipur’s Sinapati district have asked the state government to resolve the issue at the earliest. Has appealed

On May 15, another heavy truck fell off a bridge into the Lekhuri River, killing its conductor. The driver is still reported missing.
The Likharu Bridge is located between Chakumei and Makhan in Sinapati district, about 85 km from Imphal.

Coincidentally, on May 12, a truck loaded with wheat also fell on the spot, killing the driver and the handman on the spot.
According to locals, similar road accidents have been taking place on this bridge for years due to the poor condition of the road.

Immediately after Sunday’s accident, angry locals and various Sinapati-based organizations, led by the Maoist Youth Organization, set up an indefinite blockade on the Imphal-Dimapur route.

Hours later, however, the blockade was lifted after local MLAs Dikho and N Casey promised to visit the site with NHIDCL officials and take up the matter with the state government.
“They (MLAs) have given us a clear assurance that they will look into the matter and talk to the state government to improve the condition of the road. In the next few days, if the state government does not take action. “Then we will resort to another indefinite blockade along the national highway,” said a local.

“We hope the state government will look into the matter as the bridge is very narrow and a lot of precious lives have been lost in this particular area,” he added.
