Manipur police held Seven freedom fighters of underground groups

Imphal: Ahead of the second phase of elections to the Outer Manipur Parliamentary constituency reserved for scheduled tribes, Assam Rifles, and Manipur police launched a series of combing operations along the Manipur Myanmar resulting in nabbing of seven insurgents of different outfits with the recovery of a huge case amount and arms and ammunition, officials said here on Monday.

Under the directive from the headquarters Inspector General of Assam Rifles (south), the joint team of the central and state forces renewed their efforts in the counter-insurgency campaigns at the Kangkum village of Manipur’s Kamjong district bordering Myanmar on the east on Monday.

The operations succeeded with the nabbing of five insurgents of the hills and valley underground groups.

Acting on specific intelligence of the presence of freedom fighters in the general area Kangkum village, Kamjong District, Manipur, Assam Rifles launched an operation resulting in the apprehension of five hardcore freedom fighters affiliated with the proscribed Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Pary of Kangleipak, (PREPAK), and National Socialist Council of Nagaland -Issak Muiva (NSCN-IM).

An amount of Rs 1,86,720 was also recovered from them.

In yet another operational action, based on specific input concerning the presence of armed miscreants carrying out extortion activities along the Churachandpur-Sangaikot road, Assam Rifles, and police launched counter-insurgency campaigns on April 20 and apprehended two cadres of the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) with one 9mm Pistol, ammunition, and other stores.

The arrested freedom fighters of the different outfits along with the recovered items were further handed over to Manipur Police for legal actions, the officials added.

Notably, the second phase of Lok Sabha elections will be held on April 26 in the 13 assembly constituencies of eight districts bordering Myanmar, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Assam.
