Manipur Human Rights Commission rejects murder case report

Imphal: The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has rejected a status report submitted by the Officer-in-Charge of Thoubal police in connection with a particular murder case which was lodged a long time back.

The MHRC, however, didn’t mention the exact murder case which it was referring to other than saying that the FIR was lodged either 30 years ago or a decade back.

The OC of Thoubal police station appeared before the MHRC today along with a status report of the murder case, according to a statement issued by the commission.

The MHRC said that they have gone through the status report submitted by the OC of Thoubal police station on May 6, 2024 and are not happy with it as the police authority cited Meitei-Kuki clash and the Lok Sabha election as the reason for the delay in investigation.

“This type of reply to the commission is totally unwarranted as there was neither any ethnic clash nor Lok Sabha election when the murder case was lodged,” it added.

Considering the pendency of the investigation, the MHRC suggested that the Commissioner (Home) as well as the DGP, Manipur may take a decision to ascertain whether the police personnel can be divided into two wings so that one wing may maintain law and order while the second wing may investigate serious cases like murder, rape and other offences.

The MHRC has listed the matter on June 28, 2024 and directed the Superintendent of Police, Thoubal as well as the OC of Thoubal Police Station to appear in person before the commission.
