Silchar: Residents of Sonbari in Lakhipur assembly constituency of Cachar district in south Assam have been patrolling the area (Sonbari) along the Barak River since Tuesday to prevent public transport boats or any other boat from Manipur from entering the waterway can be prevented from entering the territory of Assam.
Locals have been patrolling the banks of the river since Tuesday after two women from Sonbari area, who were traveling to Manipur to attend a religious event, were allegedly thrown from a boat and thrown into the river by the state’s Village Defense Party. The edge was left in an “unsafe” place. As (VDP) members women did not have Inner Line Permit (ILP) documents.
An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is an official travel document issued by the Government of India to allow an Indian citizen to enter a protected area for a limited period of time.
According to Sonbari locals, the VDP members misbehaved with both the women and when the Sonbari locals got the news, they brought the women to their native place.
Sources said that the incident caused outrage among the locals and a group of angry mobs reached the banks of the Barak river at Sonbari (located near the Assam-Manipur border), about 4 km from Lakhipur, and attacked the area. I started patrolling to intercept a boat. Manipur by passing through Assam territory.
Since then, the people, who have set up temporary camps with plastic sheets on the banks of the river, stopped all the boats coming from Manipur on the river bank at Sonbari and diverted them back to Manipur. Is. Sources said that no official of Manipur has contacted the protesters in the last two days.
The people (who are patrolling the Sonbari area) claimed that as per government records the southern part of the Barak river belongs to Assam and the northern part belongs to Manipur, but the people of Manipur claim That the whole part belongs to this state.
Whenever people from Sonbari (Assam) go fishing from the river towards Assam, Manipur VDP officials ask for ILP documents. If one goes to Jeribam (Manipur) to get ILP, they (Manipur authorities) say that people are not given ILP for fishing. People alleged that the people of Assam were being harassed in this way. They threatened to continue their patrolling activity and prevent Manipur boats from entering Assam until a reasonable solution to the ILP issue is found.
BJP legislator from Lakhipur Kaushik Rai told to Media on Thursday that he will speak to the authorities concerned about the matter.
No Manipur official could be reached for comment.
It may be noted that Joynal Hussain, a truck driver from Lalpani, Lakhipur (Cachar district), was allegedly beaten up by the police at Kaimai in Tamenglong district of Manipur earlier this month after Joynal demanded Rs 300 from the policemen. Couldn’t give. Joynal gave them Rs 20 (which he had at the time) which the police took from him and later took him to the local police station and allegedly beat him up. After this incident, the traffic of trucks on National Highway 37 (Assam Manipur Road) stopped for a long time.
At least 14 people were detained in Nagampal area of Manipur’s capital Imphal on Tuesday after police found them without ILP papers. 14 persons were produced before the court which ordered their deportation.
