Shillong: A man has been arrested in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district for supposedly sharing a video on social media that allegedly showed BJP’s votes being cast by pressing any button on an EVM. Vote in favour, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor on Saturday.
The man, identified as Bolong R. Sangma, had shared the clip on February 16, alleging EVM tampering.
He added that Sangma was arrested after a police complaint was lodged by the returning officer of Rongjeng assembly constituency.
Kharkongor said a case was registered against him under Section 171G of the IPC, which deals with making false statement in connection with elections.
EVMs or Electronic Voting Machines are tamper-proof and go into factory reset mode if any tampering is attempted, he said, adding that there are various safeguards at every level.
