Mahatma Gandhi statue uncovered by CM Sarma at new assembly

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the new assembly premises on the opening day of the autumn session of the Legislative Assembly.

The autumn session of the Assembly represents the first sitting of the House in the new building.
Sarma posted, “It is an honor to unveil the statue of Mahatma Gandhi before the first session of the Assam Legislative Assembly in the new complex.” “(Mahatma Gandhi’s) enduring message of peace, non-violence and harmony continues to guide and inspire us. Bapuji is a beacon for our nation.”
The new Assam Legislative Assembly building was inaugurated on June 30 by Parliament Speaker Om Birla.

The Assembly had long been functioning from an old tea warehouse, which was converted to house its seats in 1972 after Dispur became the capital of Assam.
The new complex is spread over 10 acres and consists of a main building, which will also include a house and adjoining buildings for administrative and other parts, officials said.

The new house has a seating capacity of more than 180 legislators.
The current strength of the assembly is 126 MLAs.
