The most awaited and vibrant festival of Assam, Magh Bihu is upon us and the streets are filled with Pithas, laddoos and a variety of Assamese sweets.
Bihu is an important festival of Assam and Assamese celebrate it thrice a year. The three Bihu are festivals honoring Krishna, cattle (Goru Bihu), family elders, fertility and the Mother Goddess.
Rongali or Bohag Bihu is celebrated in April, Kongali or Kati Bhu is celebrated in October and Bhogali or Magh Bihu is celebrated in January.
Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu
Bohag Bihu is one of the most important and significant festivals in Assam’s Bihu calendar. It celebrates the beginning of the harvest season and is also considered the first day of the Assamese New Year. The importance of this festival is purely agricultural in nature.
Kongali or Kati Bihu
Kati Bihu is not a grand festival and the festivals are more serious in nature. This Bihu is celebrated in the month of October when the rice plant is transplanted. During this time the grains of the farmers are usually empty, hence it is known as Kongali (poor) Bihu.
Bhogali or Magh Bihu
Bhogali Bihu or Magh Bihu is celebrated in the month of January to mark the end of the harvest season. After Bohag Bihu, Magh Bihu is the second biggest Bihu festival in Assam. Farmers are loaded with grain at Magh Bihu and there is a festival all around.
