Imphal: Longjam Memchoubi, a leader of Meira Paibis (Women’s Vigilante Group), who was at the forefront of various movements in Manipur, passed away at Sija Hospital in Imphal after prolonged illness.
She was 84 years old and is survived by three sons and three daughters.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed his condolences on the death of the leader of Meira Paibis.
“I am saddened by the sudden demise of activist Longjam Memchoubi. Manipur has lost a leader who was at the forefront of many political and social movements. He also participated in raising a voice on the current crisis and till his last breath was a Be a true patriot. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and followers. May his soul rest in peace,” Singh wrote on X.
Memchoubi Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba was the President of Manipur and also the President and Advisor of Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM).
After a public honor at Poirei Leimarol’s office in Andolan Keithel, Khoyathong, Memchoubi’s remains were laid to rest on Monday at the PDA complex in Lamphel, where Meira Paibi group founding leader Ima Kombi was also laid to rest.
Meira Paibi was a movement founded in 1977 by brave women from Kaching district.
The movement was launched by brave women and mothers of the district with the aim of redressing the human rights violations committed against the innocent by the paramilitary and armed forces.
