Aizawl: Mizoram Law Minister T J Lalnuntluanga was scheduled to visit the neighboring state of Manipur to take stock of the situation and oversee the evacuation of residents of the state stranded there.
He was accompanied by lawmaker L Thangmawia, president of the youth wing of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and leader of the central committee of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), the largest civil society organization in Mizoram.
L Thangmawia said the proposed trip was canceled after the Manipur government denied entry apparently due to security concerns.
He said he plans to assess the situation in the neighboring state and monitor the evacuation of Mizoram residents, who are stranded after violent clashes between ethnic tribal and non-tribal communities in several areas, particularly Imphal. and in Churachandpur.
Meanwhile, Mizoram home commissioner and secretary H Lalengmawia said that 131 of the 196 Mizos, who have submitted their names to the state government, have been shifted to Guwahati and Kolkata on Sunday.
He said that another 37 people will be flown to Guwahati on Monday and another 28 will be flown to the same destination on Tuesday.
Official sources also said that 45 students have been brought back to the state safely on Sunday.
