Kohima: In recognition of their significant contribution to the growth and development of Nagaland, particularly in Kohima, the Government of Nagaland has declared the Gorkhas as indigenous non-Naga indigenous people. The announcement was made by Naga Governor La Ganesan, who highlighted the Gorkha community’s history of sacrifice and their integral role in the state.
Addressing a reception organized by the Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima in collaboration with Gorkha NGOs and Jatiya Sansathas, Governor Ganesan expressed his happiness over the honor given to the Gorkhas.
He acknowledged the long-standing contribution of the Gorkha people to the nation and their close ties with the Nagaland community.
Governor Ganesan emphasized that the presence of Gorkha settlers in Nagaland, especially Kohima, dates back almost two centuries. He speculated that their ancestors may have come after the arrival of the British or were brought to the region for various purposes, including recruitment of armed men into various armies.
He also noted the common monogoloid ancestry between the Gorkhas and the Naga people, along with characteristics such as food habits, ancestral rituals, bravery, politeness and hardworking nature.
Highlighting the friendly nature of the Gurkha community, Governor Ganesan highlighted their ability to adapt and integrate into any society they become a part of. He appreciated their willingness to establish strong ties with the local people of various neighboring villages.
Governor Ganesan expressed hope for the continued growth of relations and friendship between the Nagas and the Gorkhas and emphasized the need for their sustainable partnership. He urged the Gurkhas to maintain their exemplary citizenship and contribute more to the nation building process.
