Imphal: On the opening day of the two-day Berkap-Reiju Festival, a cultural exhibition to revive and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Kom tribe was held at Ichum Keirap Kom village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who was the chief guest of the morning session of the event, started the festival with an arrow aimed at a picture of a bird hanging from a pole.
Traditional dances and cultural performances were the main highlights of the opening ceremony.
On their arrival, the Chief Minister and other dignitaries received a warm traditional welcome from the villagers. He also beat the gong as part of the festival’s opening ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, CM N Biren Singh assured to consider the demands put forward by the local people which include widening of the road, upgradation of UJB school and construction of Primary Health Centre.
He further encouraged the villagers to ensure that economically weaker families get the benefits of government welfare schemes.
Saitu Haokholet Kipgen MLA,MLA of Lamlai AC Kh. Ibomcha, Moirang AC Th. Shanti, CSO leaders, village heads and church leaders also attended the event.
