New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Thursday recommended the appointment of senior advocate Kardak Ete as a judge of the Guwahati High Court.
Ete belongs to Scheduled Tribe.
The Collegium, comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph, noted that the Guwahati High Court Collegium comprising the then Chief Justice and two senior-most judges had unanimously made the recommendation on December 1, 2022.
He noted that the chief ministers and governors of the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland have agreed to the recommendation.
The Supreme Court Collegium noted, “To ascertain the fitness and suitability of Kardak Ete for promotion to the High Court, in terms of the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the affairs of the Guwahati High Court were consulted.

The Intelligence Bureau’s report indicates that he has a good personal and professional image and has not revealed anything negative about integrity.
“The candidate belongs to a Scheduled Tribe. Apart from his own merit and standing at the Bar, the appointment of Kardak Ete will bring more diversity and inclusion to the High Court. Hence, the Collegium has decided to recommend that Kardik Ete, Advocate should be appointed Judge of Gauhati High Court.
