
Karbi rebel group new chief held, arms ammunition seized
BOKAJAN: The police and CRPF made a major breakthrough after intercepting an Alto car with registration number AS 01 EF 0152 in Manja Tini Ali area of โโKarbi Anglong district of Assam on July 28.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, the police team found 41 letterheads belonging to a fledgling extremist group called the United People’s Front of Karbi Longri (UPFKL).
Two people in the vehicle, Rajesh Phangso (33) and Sanjay Engti (32) were arrested in this connection. The police also registered a case (No. 27/2023) under Sections 16, 17, 18, and 20 of the UA(P) Act along with Sections 120B, 384, and 511 of the IPC.
Further investigations and interrogations were conducted during police remand which led to shocking revelations.
The arrested persons revealed that Sanjay Engti is the chief of UPFKL. The militant outfit was recently formed, and had procured arms and ammunition, which were hidden in an Alto car that was seized on July 28.
Based on the information provided by the arrested rebels, the police were able to recover the arms and ammunition hidden under the vehicle.
The weapons recovered include one 9 mm pistol, one .22 pistol, three HE 36 hand grenades, two detonators and several rounds of ammunition.
Police said further investigation is underway to locate any additional arms and ammunition and to identify other members or associates of the organization.
