Aizawl: Union Minister of State for External Affairs RK Ranjan Singh on Thursday said the ambitious Kaladan Multi-modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) has been delayed due to political uncertainty in Myanmar.
He said that the Center prioritizes the bilateral cross-border project and waterways project with Bangladesh under the Act East policy.
“Due to the unpredictable environment in Myanmar, our progress towards the Kaladan project is getting somewhat derailed,” Singh said at a news conference here.
He said that the Kaladan project was strategically planned by the Center to connect the north-eastern part of the country with the Indo-Pacific countries.
“The Kaladan project has been deliberately and strategically planned by the Center with the full support of the Mizoram government. The project, if it materializes, will help us get exposure to the Indian Ocean and give us It will also connect all Indo-Pacific countries,” said Singh, who is also from the northeast (Manipur).
Although the Kaladan project was derailed, according to the Union minister, the Center has an alternative and is looking for waterways to Bangladesh.
Singh attended the G20 business meeting held in Aizawl on Thursday.
Addressing a meeting held at Mizoram University (MZU), Singh said that the North-Eastern region has a large population of youth, who are agile in skill acquisition and have good experience of communicating with customers in fluent English.
“This should be taken advantage of by our business community to employ these skilled people in various sectors. The NE region has a diverse potential to be an engine of growth to advance “Atmanir Bhar Bharat”, he said.
