JD(U) : Naga solution should be solved before elections

Dimapur (Nagaland): The Janata Dal (United) has said that the decades-old Naga political issue should be resolved as soon as possible so that the upcoming assembly elections in Nagaland can be held on schedule.

JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Aneel Prasad Hegde said here that the mandate for the 2018 elections was ‘election for solutions’.
The JD(U) believes that the failure to resolve the Naga political issue is due to “political instability” in the northeastern state, Hegde said on Saturday.

He said that the solution of the problem is fundamental for the lasting peace and prosperity of the Nagas.

To find a solution to this problem, the Center and the NSCN (IM) signed a framework agreement on 3 August 2015 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The framework agreement came after 80 rounds of negotiations spanning 18 years, with the first breakthrough in 1997 when a ceasefire agreement was sealed in Nagaland after decades of insurgency that began shortly after independence in 1947.

Apart from the framework agreement with the NSCN (IM), the Center signed a consensus position with the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) comprising seven organizations (NNPGs) in December 2017.
However, a final solution is still in the offing, mainly due to the government’s unwillingness to recognize the NSCN(IM)’s persistent demand for a separate flag and constitution. After a long hiatus, talks between the two sides started in September last year.

Hegde said that instead of holding elections and providing a stable government, it was not appropriate to call for President’s rule in Nagaland as a solution to the thorny issue is the need of the hour.

The Rising People’s Party (RPP), a political outfit from Nagaland, which was formed in 2021, last month urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to impose President’s Rule, alleging that the state was performing worst under several parameters. is going to demonstrate.
Nagaland has seen a lot of violence in the last eight decades of political struggle, the JD(U) MP appealed to all stakeholders to refrain from making any statement that would tip the hand of anti-democratic forces. Those who want to prolong the unrest. Take advantage of the Nagas’ weakness

JD(U) general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan, who is in-charge of North East, said the party leaders are in Nagaland to review the situation in the state where the last assembly elections were held on February 27, 2018.
He said the party was concerned about the “lack of development” in Nagaland and other northeastern states.

Stating that the JD(U) has always stood for equal development of all regions, he said that creating a separate state from Nagaland would greatly harm the unity among the Naga tribes.

The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) is demanding a separate state, alleging “neglect” by the government in all aspects of development. He has announced not to contest any election, including the 2023 assembly elections, until his demand is met.
Khan said the party believes that the Center should provide sufficient funds to the state so that sufficient funds can be allocated for the development of Eastern Nagaland.

He said the party would field at least 20 candidates for the assembly elections, though the constituencies were yet to be decided.
