Imphal: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on July 7 asked External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar if US Ambassador Eric Garcetti should be sent to the Center to express his concern over the violence and killings in Manipur, calling it a matter of “humanitarian concern”.
In a tweet, the Congress leader wrote, “Will External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar summon the US Ambassador and tell him in no uncertain terms that the US has no role in Manipur?
The responsibility to restore peace and harmony in Manipur lies with the central government, state government, civil society and state political parties, in particular.
The Prime Minister is silent and the Home Minister has become ineffective. This does not mean that there is any opening for any other country. This is an Indian challenge which we as Indians have to address with sensitivity and determination.”
This comes after US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti expressed concern over the violence and killings in Manipur, calling it a matter of “humanitarian concern”.
During a press conference in Kolkata on July 6, Garcetti conveyed the readiness of the United States to assist India in dealing with the situation if requested.
He also appreciated Kolkata’s multi-religious nature and expressed interest in promoting investment in eastern and northeastern parts of India.
Speaking about the situation in Manipur, Garcetti stressed the need for peace and prayed for the region. He said that America sees this issue not only as a strategic concern but as a matter of humanitarian concern.
Acknowledging the progress made in India’s northeast and eastern regions, Garcetti emphasized that peace is essential for further progress. After peace is established in Manipur, the US is ready to provide support, projects and investments.
During his visit to Kolkata, Garcetti highlighted the strategic importance of the Northeast, which shares borders with five neighboring countries.
Garcetti acknowledges Kolkata’s historical and intellectual legacy, citing notable figures such as Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray, Saurav Ganguly, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He appreciated the inclusive spirit of the city and the vibrant celebrations of various festivals.
