Imphal: Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Chairperson (Justice) UB Saha along with its members KK Singh, Haobam Rosita, Secretary and Law Officer W Basantkumar visited the students who attacked them during the protest.
Two students, who were injured due to excessive use of force, demanded justice and their photos after the execution surfaced on social media.
On Tuesday, the MHRC took up the case of alleged assault on students by the Manipur Police, Rapid Action Force and Jat Regiment, observing that the MHRC could physically see the injured if any of them were present in Imphal hospital.
The MHRC team first met 14-year-old Wahengbam Jotin of Arapti Mayai Leikai who is undergoing treatment at the Raj Medicity.
Jotin’s family alleged that Jotin was injured in the stomach by firing by the policemen of Singjamei police station. Jotin’s mother, who is in the hospital, said that she has received Rs 50,000 as assistance from the Manipur government.
The MHRC team also visited Sheja Hospital where 17-year-old Loitangbam Kishan of Angtha and 24-year-old Mayanglambam Johnson of Top Khongnangkhong were killed in the heavy use of force by security forces in and around Imphal on September 27. He was injured.
Kishan alleged that RAF personnel fired pellet guns at close range. On inquiry, a doctor who did not want to be named said, “Given the nature of the injuries on his body, the bullet could have been from one place.”
The doctor also said that 60 projectiles have been recovered from Kishan’s body and some projectiles are still in the body.
The MHRC team also visited Sougrakpam Iriraz at RIMS. Iriraz also suffered an injury on his right leg during the protest. In the petition filed with the MHRC, one of the complainants alleged that Iriraz was in school uniform.
He was among the 30 students who marched towards the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. He was hit with a stun grenade/tear gas. T
he petition also alleged that around 2 pm on that day around 30 students of Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Imphal in their school uniform were marching from their school campus towards Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
Before reaching the Raj Bhavan, they were stopped by the Manipur police at a place near Kanglapat, a short distance from the foot over bridge.
The Manipur police personnel made them sit there and accordingly the students were sitting by the Kanglapat footpath opposite M Sector.
In utter surprise, the Manipur police personnel lobbed stun grenades/tear gas at the students without giving any warning to disperse.
In the incident, more than 10 students were injured and several of them were taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
