Imphal: In an effort to address the prolonged communal violence in Manipur, a delegation of opposition MPs from the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (India) met Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on July 30.
A delegation of 21 MPs reached Manipur on July 29 to review the situation on the ground and interact with victims of the month-long violence that gripped the state since May 3.
The delegation criticized the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue, describing it as a brazen indifference to the violence in Manipur.
They urged the government to take immediate and decisive action to restore peace and harmony in the region.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to Governor Yuki, expressing their deep concern over the increasing violence and the failure of the central and state governments to protect lives and property of the people.
The memorandum documented the shocking figures of over 140 deaths, over 500 injuries, and the burning of over 5,000 houses, resulting in the internal displacement of over 60,000 people.
During their visit, the MPs visited relief camps in Chaurachandpur, Moering and Imphal, where they interacted with the victims and shared their concerns, uncertainty, pain and suffering due to the ongoing clashes between different communities.
The delegation expressed its anger and concern over the prevailing sense of alienation among all communities and stressed the urgent need for its resolution and peace.
The memorandum also highlighted the failure of the state machinery to control the situation during the last three months, which has worsened the situation in the relief camps.
The MPs stressed the importance of special care for children in these camps and the need to address the uncertain future faced by students from different streams.
A prolonged internet ban in the region was also flagged as a concern, with MPs saying it had contributed to the spread of unsubstantiated rumours, further fueling mistrust among affected communities.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed his concern on Twitter saying that the Prime Minister’s indifference to the plight of the people of Manipur is evident, while the opposition delegation is in meaningful talks with the Governor to find a solution.
