Increase in drug abuse causes serious crimes in Mizoram

Aizawl: Rising drug use in Mizoram has given rise to various crimes, forcing law enforcement agencies to take drastic measures to control the scourge, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

Aizawl Superintendent of Police (SP) Rex Zarzoliana Vanchhawng told reporters that drug use has increased significantly in the state in the past few years, resulting in an increase in serious crimes and crimes.
However, the SP did not reveal the crime rate arising from drug use.

He said that burglary or theft is prominent among the various crimes initiated by the use of drugs. He said that drug abuse has badly affected the Mizo society and the state police department is making massive efforts to curb this scourge.

He said that the department is also considering plans to deal with drug addicts.

Vanchhawng said the state police under the jurisdiction of Aizawl SP have stepped up patrolling in the capital to maintain law and order.

He said that the police are doing their best to ensure that the Matti community is not harmed by intensifying night patrolling in sensitive areas.
According to the SP, the state police is also stepping up searches against people who entered the state without valid travel documents or passports.

He also cautioned people against spreading misleading information or fake news and misuse of social media platforms.
