In violence-hit Manipur ban on internet extended till 30 June

Imphal: The Manipur government has extended the ban on internet/data services for another five days till June 30 with immediate effect in an attempt to further disrupt law and order in the state in view of continued unrest.
In fresh orders issued by the Manipur government on Sunday, it has been announced that the suspension of internet services in the state will be extended for another five days till 3 pm on June 30.
“Further suspension of mobile data services/internet/data services including broadband services and internet/data services through VASTs of BharatNet Phase-II,” the order issued by state commissioner (home) T Ranjit Singh said. is further suspended within the territorial jurisdiction of the State of Manipur, except those already specifically exempted by the Government and may subsequently be exempted and authorized on Internet Lease Line (ILL) basis. as per the permission of the Authority.”
This order is issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order within the jurisdiction of the state of Manipur.
The order said that the Director General of Police, Manipur, through a letter dated June 24, informed that there were reports of incidents of violence, assault and burning of houses and premises, including exchange of fire.
It also said that there is concern that some anti-social elements may use social media extensively to transmit images, hate speech and hate video messages, which may inflame public sentiments. which may have a serious impact on the law and order situation in Manipur.
The order also states that inflammatory content and false rumors may result in loss of life or damage to public/private property and cause widespread disruption of public peace and communal harmony, which it can be communicated to the public through Social media/messaging services on mobile services, SMS services and dongle services.
It is still necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order by preventing the spread of misinformation and false rumors on mobile phones etc. through various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. Bulk SMS, he added.
