Kohima: The Nagaland Assembly has passed a bill ensuring reservation of one-third seats for women in urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state.
Presenting the Nagaland Municipal Bill 2023 in the House, CM Neiphiu Rio said that the provisions relating to tax on land and buildings have been omitted.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that the bill provides for reservation of one-third of ULB seats for women.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said, “This law is not the end but only the beginning.
He said that the time has come for the women of Nagaland to participate in the administration of urban local bodies.
“Our state may be a late starter in the process of urbanization. However, the rate of urbanization in Nagaland has been quite rapid of late,” Rio said.
The Nagaland Chief Minister added: “We now have 39 urban local bodies in the state. We have to provide the required urban infrastructure and civic amenities to this growing urban population through local self-governments.”
