Imphal: A team of Assam Rifles foiled an alleged timber smuggling attempt in the general area of Nungshong in Ukhrul district of Manipur.
Assam Rifles troops intercepted three trucks loaded with illegal timber worth Rs 1.12 crore in the general area of Nungshong bridge, a defense statement said on Friday.
The seized timber along with the caught smugglers and vehicles were handed over to the Forest Beat Officer, Ukhrul for further legal action.
Meanwhile, Civil Social Organizations – All Clubs and Organizations of Wangoi Assembly Constituency have launched a special campaign to ban and check illegal transportation of timber/timber beams on Mayai Lambi State Highway connecting Imphal to Mayang Imphal. announced, local MLA Khuraijam Loken said.
He added that based on the reports of trucks loaded with wood/wooden beams plying Mayai Lambi late at night, the campaign is being conducted with the aim of protecting forests and environment.
At his official residence in Babupara, Imphal, Wangoi AC MLA said that the forest area in the state has decreased significantly due to increased deforestation and other human activities in the hills.
