Tura: A powerful storm accompanied by lightning and thunder has hit the Garo Hills extensively since 5 am on June 22, causing landslides and property damage.
A large section of the PA Sangma Stadium, which had no retaining wall, collapsed, spilling tons of soil from the main field and flooding the road adjacent to the former Coal India Limited complex.

It should be noted that this stadium was inaugurated in 2022.
Local authorities and emergency response teams rushed to the affected areas to assess the situation and provide assistance to affected residents. With reports of destroyed houses, fallen trees and blocked roads, the extent of the devastation became clear.
On December 2022, sports infrastructure in Meghalaya received a major boost when the state’s Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated a football stadium at the PA Sangma Sports Complex in Tura in the state on 16 December.
“The stadium is a technological marvel, the largest pre-engineered composite football stadium in the country with a seating capacity of 9,500. This beautiful stadium is part of an equally magnificent sports complex built at a cost of Rs 127.7 crore which is nearby. Its completion,” an official statement said.
According to the statement, the football stadium and two indoor stadiums have been built on a combined area of ​​17,000 square meters.

“The indoor stadium with gymnasium, swimming pool, table tennis hall, squash hall and badminton hall will be ready for inauguration by December 2023,” the statement added.
