Agartala: In a strong show of unity, a gathering of 56 organizations gathered in Agartala on Wednesday to advocate the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language.
The protesters stressed the importance of the demand and issued a stern warning that they would launch an “aggressive” movement if the government failed to meet their demands.
Talking to reporters, Mevar Kumar Jamatia, former minister and top leader of Tipra Motha, expressed his concern over the politicization of Kokborok language by both the previous administration and the current BJP government.
“For the last 50 years, the locals of Tripura have been continuously demanding the adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok.
“Language is an issue close to our hearts, and this protest is a sign of our deep commitment.
“During the Left Front government, a commission called the Bhasa Commission was set up.
Many locals were in favor of using the Roman script for Kokbork. Unfortunately the previous government failed to implement this recommendation which is really disappointing. It is important to note that this report is not ours alone but an official government report,” Mevar said.
Expressing his frustration, Mevar warned that an immediate and massive movement would be launched if the government continued to ignore their demands.
“We waited patiently for a long time. Both the previous government and the current BJP administration are guilty of playing politics with our beloved language.
