Agartala: In a shocking incident, a dead dog was found tied to the boot of a four-wheeler and dragged on the road in South Tripura district. The video of the brutal act went viral on social media platforms prompting the police to arrest the accused driver within 24 hours of the incident, following which netizens were outraged.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha took to his social media handle and told people that the accused has been arrested by the police. “Police have arrested the accused in connection with the brutal act of dragging a puppy from the vehicle. The vehicle has also been impounded and police are taking further legal action”, read the Chief Minister’s social media post.
The four-wheeler, reportedly, was ferrying passengers from Belonia to Subroom when the incident came to the notice of some people. According to sources, the driver of the vehicle has been identified as Abhijit Paul, a resident of Manu Bazar area of South Tripura district.
When some passengers asked him about this inhuman act, he refused to comment and instead dismissed his objections. The video showing the cruel practice drew a strong response from NGOs and voluntary groups working in the field of animal welfare and protection. Many NGOs shared the video on their social media platforms and demanded strict action against the driver.
Agartala city senior dentist Dr. Ranabir Roy has lodged an FIR against the vehicle at West Agartala police station.
Sources said that Abhijit Paul, the owner of the vehicle, has denied the allegations of animal cruelty leveled against him. He told the police that he did not know that there was a dead animal tied to his car. He blamed some miscreants for the act.
