Guwahati: At least seven students of Assam Engineering College in Guwahati died in a road accident in the city.The deceased students of Assam Engineering College were boarders of Hostel No. 7 of the institution.
The accident took place late on Sunday night when a Scorpio car collided with a Bolero pickup truck.
It is suspected that the student who was driving the Scorpio car was under the influence of alcohol.
The Scorpio car, which is believed to have been speeding, lost control and collided with the Bolero pickup truck.
The accident took place near Jalukbari flyover in Guwahati, Assam.
The deceased students of Assam Engineering College have been identified as Imon Baruah of Dibrugarh, Kaushik Mohan (Sivasagar), Arindam Bhuwal (Guwahati), Niyor Deka (Guwahati), Upangshu Sarma (Nagaon), Rajkiran Bhuyan (Majuli) and Kaushik Baruah (Mangaldoi).
According to preliminary information, ten people were present in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Seven of the ten died on the spot while three others were rushed to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in a critical condition.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also expressed regret over this incident.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of young and precious lives in the road accident in Jalukbari. My deepest condolences to their parents and families,” the Assam Chief Minister said.
He added: “The officials at GMCH have been spoken to. All possible medical assistance is being provided to the injured.
