In Thangjing hill range new bunkers set up by Kuki community

Imphal: Amid the hype of peace returning in Manipur, Kuki militants have set up multiple bunkers by digging a trench on the western side of Narenseina and its adjacent villages along Thangjing hill range.
This new development has created apprehension among the people, specially farmers as they fear they might be attacked while harvesting crops.

Reportedly, the trench was detected at Nelpa Ching, Leingang Kuki village and in the periphery of Langjingmanbi Reserve Forest on the western side of the hill range above the 2nd IRB camp at Naranseina under Moirang police station in drone footage.
It is further reported that the Kuki militants have expanded their bunkers at the hilltop of Nelpa Ching which they used earlier to launch attacks on Meetei villages.
As per the locals, the new bunkers were set up about 200 m to 800 m from Moirang High Canal.
The farmers in the area said that they might not be able to harvest crops as Kuki militants might attack them anytime.

And expressed desire for the Government to deploy adequate security forces at the sensitive areas so that they can do their work safely.

Speaking to the media, vice president of Moirang Kendra Farmers Development Co-operative Society Ltd N Jadumani asked on what account can the Government claim that peace is returning in Manipur.
Saying that Kuki militants continue to build more bunkers in different areas of Bishnupur using heavy machinery, he claimed that there are unauthorised bunkers even in areas close to the camp of Sikh Regiment.
Farmers were attacked earlier too causing even death to some, he reminded and added that the farmers may be reluctant to go to fields for harvesting paddy if there is no serious intervention from the Govern- ment and security forces.
Some farmers have started going to fields for harvesting paddy but they don’t feel safe, he added.
Jadumani cautioned that many farmers will die if Kuki militants lay ambush during the harvesting season as harvesting crops and storing them requires more hands.
He went on to state that about 40 pari of paddy land will have minimal output while another 800 pari won’t have any yield this season in their area due to the disturbances caused to farming by the ongoing violence.
Jadumani then expressed desire for the Government to make sure there is no disturbance while harvesting crops and to provide seeds for other crops.
Saying that the farmers may feel safe to some extent if the bunkers are dismantled and the trench covered, he said that State police failing to enforce rule of law in certain parts of Manipur, however, is unfortunate.
Has a separate administration been put in place in Manipur, he asked while urging the Government to understand the sentiment of the people and work on it.
